How to get Mauied. Go on a blind date and get married in Hawaii.

The Blind Date...

While working for Maui Memorial Hospital, a fellow co-worker set me up on a blind date with what turned into the last blind date I would ever have. I had been single for many years and swore I would never get married again. After only one night, I was hooked on Bob.

We went to one of the great dinner and dance clubs on the Lahaina shore. Bob was tall, so very tall. He was an ok dancer, but the best kisser I've ever met. I think our first kiss was what sealed the deal. When he played his guitar for me, I was totally in love.

Outdoor wedding plans...

You've met the man of your dreams and now you want the wedding of your dreams. It's easy to plan an outdoor wedding in Hawaii. Perfect weather is always available!

Maui has arguably the top 5 beaches in the world. But beaches may not be the best place for a wedding. You may want to check out the stunning parks on each island. Maui is known as the Valley Isle and the best park on the island is the valley known as Iao Valley.

Our Wedding Plans

After dating for a year, Bob and I decided to get 'Mauied'. No contest. The best part of all is planning a wedding on Maui, the top place to get married in the whole U.S.A.!

Bob's favorite place on Maui was Haleakala crater and it is a fantastic choice for a wedding. But I loved Iao Valley and Kepaniwai park. The park was ever so much more convenient and we knew the date we picked, February 14th, would be a popular day for weddings on Maui. Sure enough, there were three or four other couples there that day getting married.

Invitations were sent out, the judge was contacted and a wedding license was secured. All of our friends on the island came, including Bob's band, his parents and my friends from work. It wasn't a big crowd, but I planned it well. I even make the wedding cake!

Flowers are all over the place in Maui. A lot of them are rare and extremely beautiful. I did not expect Poinsettias, but they were in bloom all over the park.

A lady from where I worked made all the flower arrangements She made a Lei for me and the in-laws. She made a head lei for me too. Then she added boutonnieres for Bob and the best man. I was able to save them in my keepsake album.

Strange events of the day:

  • A Texan marries a Yankee
  • On an Irish holiday
  • In a Japanese park
  • by a Mormon Judge
  • with Christmas flowers in bloom!

Top 10 things to do while you are on Maui

  1. The Old Lahaina Luau
  2. Sunrise at Haleakala Crater
  3. Cruise down the volcano on a bicycle
  4. Visit the Maui botanical gardens in Kula
  5. Snorkel or scuba at Molokini
  6. Kapalua Beach! or any of the other world class beaches.
  7. Drive all the way to Hana and maybe the rest of the way if you are even braver!
  8. Whale watching from November to May
  9. Shopping in Lahaina
  10. Zipline on Maui!

The best wedding spot ever!

Where do you think the best wedding spot in the world is?

  • Maui or Hawaii in general
  • Paris

How much time elapsed between the blind date and the wedding?

Austinstar profile image

Austinstar Hub Author 12 months ago

Hi Chasuk - I would say about one and half years. But we never dated any one else during that time.

Bob looks like he has the necessary sense of humor to be married to our littte Lela.

(And you're one of those genuine, red-headed ladies, aren't you?)

I loved this so much! From the title all the way through. Way cool, tell us more! So where was the honeymoon? I guess you stayed in Hawaii - what better place! Bod does look like a cool dude - he has an infectious smile:)

The honeymoon was at the Royal Lahaina Resort. The best man worked there and he comped us a room for the night.

Bob does have an infectious smile. But he did have a good buzz going that day.

It was the best wedding I ever had!

Maybe I'll go there for our 20th anniversary! Now here's how I'll go about it - I'll tell Dave I want to have a huge ceremony to renew our vows in front of ALL our family and friends.

Or we could skip it and go quietly to Hawaii!

What do you think he'd choose??

Austinstar profile image

Austinstar Hub Author 12 months ago

That sounds like a real good plan. I'll have to remember to use that trick on Bob!

The best wedding I had was in Carmel, Ca overlooking the ocean and mountains. Just beautiful.

Austinstar profile image

Austinstar Hub Author 12 months ago

I've heard that Carmel, CA is beautiful. Actually, I really like California. I wonder why they're all moving to Austin?

diogenese 12 months ago

Now, that's a man! My size but about 6 inches taller I'd say. Lovely pictures. I was only in Hawaii once, back in the 1970's I remember sitting in the toilet and reading Pan Am had just gone belly-up and I think we had tickets with 'em; can't remember what happened. I could live there; bit pricey though.

No wonder your a happy lass! Bob

Austinstar profile image

diogenese - It was great living there, but you're right. It's more than a bit pricey. I lived there for 2 years and it took me 10 years to pay off the debt!

SilentReed - Thank you! I wish the same for all my friends.

Ok so I waited until the kids were in bed and I asked Dave is he ouellette like to have the renewal of our vows or the quiet trip to Hawaii and he said, "Well I've always wanted to go to Hawaii," haha! Easier than I thought - but hey that's like 8 years away! I should have said our 12th:)!

You both look so happy which is fabulous. My husband spotted me at a theater. I was walking in and he was exiting. He look for me for 1 1/2 years and we bunked into each other at a frat party. We had an on again off again relationship until we got serious and married. We have been married for almost 44 wonderful years.

This was lovely, Lela, thank you for sharing those beautiful photos - you with your beauiful smile and radiant real red hair, and Bob with his 'satisfied' look and his, er ... tallness. How tall is Bob? 7 feet?

My wish for you both - that you will always be as happy as you look in that wedding photo.

Thanks for inviting us to the wedding, Lela~! What a great idea and love your title!! I think the best place to get married is where your heart's love is.....but Hawaii would certainly have been nice!

I love a good wedding story! What a great place to get married. The lei and garland are a wonderful Hawaiian touch and you both look so blissful; so nice to hear it is still that 20 years on. That is what makes the story great!

This is a really lovely story. As you must know by now I am an incurable romantic so this ticks all the boxes for romance in my books. I wish you and your husband many more years of happiness. Thank you.

Aw...first RH, now you. All these Happy Ending romance stories are making me quite depressed.

Seriously though, that's a lovely story...:)

Austinstar profile image

Austinstar Hub Author 12 months ago

Thank you, Jane. It's not always happy. There are times when I could pour hot molten lava over his head :-) and I'm sure he could do the same to me from time to time. Somebody on TV answered the question on how to have a long and happy marriage - "Just show up every day". By Jove, I think he's got it!"

Austinstar! Too bad I didn't have that quote for the interview:). You are so right! I actually asked Dave before if I stopped breathing during the night - would he a) administer CPR and call 911 or B) roll over and pretend not to notice until morning!

The scary thing is - he had to think about it before responding! Yikes!

Looks like a beautiful wedding to have! I got married on Magen's Bay beach in St. Thomas (Virgin Islands). It was indeed gorgeous and I wouldn't change my wedding for the world! Good job on this hub. Voted up and beautiful.

Yeah, I am thinking hawaii weddings are the best. I watched my friend get married on the beach in kaanapali a few years ago. It was seriously incredible.

And you and Bob left that island paradise to move to TEXAS why????????? Lovely wedding pics, btw. ;D

Austinstar profile image

Austinstar Hub Author 9 months ago

Hawaii is so green and lush and I miss it terribly sometimes, but I haven't won the lottery yet and without that, I'll never have enough money to live there.

Texas is our home. But right now, I wonder if the whole state isn't going to catch fire and burn everything down to the ground. 116 today near Dallas!

JamaGenee profile image

JamaGenee Level 8 Commenter 9 months ago

Not much better here in the 'burbs of OKC. Was 109 yesterday and eight homes burned to the ground, all heat-related. Did get some satisfaction, though, that it was hotter (112) in NE KS, my former home. Can't remember it ever being that hot in the 25 years I lived there. A nice "surprise" for the friend who's been whining about temps in the mid-90s. (Oops, did I just dent my Karma?) ;D
