Collecting Gold Coins

Collecting gold has become all the rage these days. It's fun, not as expensive as you may think, and gold retains its value pretty much forever!

Most people think that investing in gold futures stock is the way to go. And maybe if you are rich enough, that is a good plan. But for the common numismatist or coin collector, stock has very little value.  It can't be held in your hands like a beautiful gold coin.

Currency comes in many forms and the best is the gold proof coins produced by the U. S. Mint. They are made of 22 karat pure American gold. Far from being ordinary money, they are a collector's dream to own and look at.

How to buy Gold Coins

From the U. S. Mint:

"Production of United States Mint American Eagle Gold Proof and Uncirculated Coins has been temporarily suspended because of unprecedented demand for American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins. Currently, all available 22-karat gold blanks are being allocated to the American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin Program, as the United States Mint is required by Public Law 99-185 to produce these coins “in quantities sufficient to meet public demand . . . .”

The United States Mint will resume the American Eagle Gold Proof and Uncirculated Coin Programs once sufficient inventories of gold bullion blanks can be acquired to meet market demand for all three American Eagle Gold Coin products. Additionally, as a result of the recent numismatic product portfolio analysis, fractional sizes of American Eagle Gold Uncirculated Coins will no longer be produced.

Update: Due to the continued, sustained demand for American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins, 2009-dated American Eagle Gold Proof Coins will not be produced."

As you can see, the mint cannot even keep up with the demand! So what can you buy?

Buy this nickel for 3.8 Million Dollars!

Yes, that's right! Million with a capitol M! The 'Olsen' 1913 Liberty Head Nickel just sold for $3,737,500.00! This coin is famous. It was featured on an episode of Hawaii Five-O and is only one of 5 known specimens of this five cent piece.

People have been known to find gold coins dropped once upon a time out in the fields. A friend of mine found a $20 gold coin while visiting the site of a dam being built. The coin was just laying in the stirred up dirt. He sold it for several hundred dollars.

Gold coins are bought and sold on eBay and Amazon along with other collectible coins. There is no reason not to get started right now collecting valuable and rare coins!

Well I'm waiting for everyone to come back from the snow cone shack - so I was hopping a few hubs. Now wait 'till Dave gets back and I ask him to buy me that nickel!

Seriously - i wish I'd bought gold instead of mutual funds. It would have made a much better investment.:(
