What the heck is it? Photographic Quiz One by L.A. Cargill
74Photo Close Ups - What the heck is it? Quiz One - Everyday Objects
Shooting close ups of any object is fun and makes for interesting quizzes. Photo puzzles often incorporate extreme close ups of groups of objects which make jig-saw puzzles increase in difficulty.
The eye of the beholder is fooled by a close up photo. It is great exercise for the brain to try to imagine what the heck the object of the photo actually is. As everyone knows, exercising the brain is the best defense for warding off old age befuddlement.
So without further ado, let's begin this installment of What the Heck is it? Photo quiz One - Unless otherwise noted, all images © L.A. Cargill, 2011, all rights reserved. You may click on the photos to see the full size image.
Close up number one
Close up number one
Hints
- It is a common object that is used daily
- This one is made from recycled material
- Sometimes these things display a message.
My grandfather had one of these and he was very proud of it. He may have even made it by hand. There is no limit to the variety of these. All of us have probably seen millions of these things and never thought of taking a close up photograph of it.
Close up number two

Hints
- This object can be hung
- It's delicious and natural
- Great songs erupt around this object
Wherever I go, I have to have one of these around. It's a feng shui object for sure. If you don't what feng (or fung) shui is, let me explain. It's kind of like using the power inherent in nature to correctly orient your world. It has something to do with qi or chi which means being in balance with the universal energy + matter + time + space. Enjoy!

Hints
- Essential equipment in Texas
- The upkeep is expensive
- Children love these
Whoa, just about anything I say about this photo will give it away if it hasn't already. Let's just say that we survived the Texas drought of 2011 (worst ever drought in the history of the state) by keeping one of these on our roof. They don't belong there, but I think it should be standard equipment on every house in the south western states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and quite possibly California. I mean most people think Californians are pretty weird anyway. But these may help.

Hints
- This belongs to the male of the species
- Sometimes it makes them a little crazy
- Red is the most popular color
Sometimes females have these, but I wouldn't trust them. Oh, they might make your heart race and it really feels good when their top is down, but men think it's a status symbol. These make a great gift for guys, but it's expensive as all get out to maintain. The accessories alone will put a huge dent in your budget. This particular one needs a new everything already. Since we are both semi-retired, this may be the last one we'll ever see in our neck of the woods.
Close up number five
Close up number five
Hints
- It's bigger than a bread box.
- It's a useful item around the ranch
- Can be used for a Halloween treat
Well, you can't really eat it, but you can do some fun things with it, especially if you add on a particular attachment. You must be 'this' high (I'm holding up my hand to about shoulder height) to use this item. It also helps if you have left the tweens and are an official teen. Personally, I'm a grown woman and wouldn't set foot near it. It's too noisy and too dangerous for me. What the heck is it?

That was fun! - I got them all right except #5, so I guess I got 100% too..!
5 minute workout brain. Yay!
This was fun, Lela, and a great idea for a hub. The only one I got correctly was the red Mustang. Beautiful car. BTW, welcome back; missed you, m'dear.
I got 'em all except for the lawn tractor!
Fun Hub.
Yay, I got them all. Number 1, I started out thinking it was something made out of ____, but then realized what it was. (I don't want to ruin it for someone else)
Oops! I lied...I also missed the bird seed!
The only one I didn't see was the lawn mower... that was until you revealed the answers. Oh yeah - and I am not one that knows years of cars - so that one was challenging. To me, it was just a car... (please, no men kill me for that comment!)
Very cool hub - oh yeah - and why do you put sprinklers on the top of your roof! I have never heard of that before!
The birdfeeder was easy, but I thought the doormat was a handkerchief, and the lawnmower, a bin.
Very clever. Just what I needed to exercise my brain, on this dull rainy morning.
Thank you.
Brilliant idea that had me completely befuddled. Too early in the morning here! Bob
this was fun to do!
That is very interesting. We have never been instructed to water our roofs in California... yet, but I haven't been hear were the wildfires have taken off either. Kind of neat learning how other people deal with these things. Very cool.
I love these things... thought about doing it myself when I look around and see all these amazing things I could take pictures of... but then... sometimes I just hate downloading the pictures too... lol
I thought the first one was a wall of tires! I did guess the bird feeder but the others I couldn't get! Awesome idea for a hub - super fun!
You should do more like this! I am going to show it to the kids see if they can guess:)
Probably shouldn't put the answers in the comments so other people can guess too hon.
Awesome! I got the door mat and the car light straight away, but the others I failed on. I guess I need more practice, I hope you'll be uploading more of these soon!
I was pretty sure it was a doormat and got the others all except for the riding mower. Our sprinkler system has been working overtime this year to keep our lawn and gardens watered. Fortunately the only water restrictions where we live is not to water between 9AM to 6PM. In other parts of our area the water restrictions are much worse. So many dead and dying trees, shrubs and plants in and around Houston. Fire danger still high especially on windy days such as today. Let's hope Texas gets MUCH MORE RAIN in the days, months and years ahead!
Nice idea. Very clever and fun.
A fun test...thought I was going to get 100% and got too sassy, cause I missed the last two. The last one was hardest...you did a great job of tricking!
Your close-up quiz is a great idea! I did miss the lawnmower, though. Good one! Now you've inspired me to try some new angles with my camera...
Hi Lela,
I received a wonderful surprise in the mail yesterday and it came from you. Thanks for the beautiful picture frame. I truthfully thought that any prizes that would be awarded from the photo contest you conducted would be more in a jocular vein. Prize humbly accepted and I thank you! Your website is terrific BTW. People living in Austin are fortunate to have you cheering for them and their success. Here is to your success as well! Again...many thanks.
This was fun. I got them all except the lawn mower. Very creative hub!
