Aztec Feathered Serpent Designs

Cóatl means serpent and Quetzalcoatl was the feathered serpent god of the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican cultures. He is found many times with the seven light glyphs around his head which were probably representative of the "Seven Sisters" or the Pleiades star constellation which was very important in the beliefs of the time.

Among the Aztecs, whose beliefs are the most thoroughly documented in historical sources, Quetzalcoatl was related to gods of the wind, of Venus, of the dawn, of merchants and of arts, crafts and knowledge. He was also the patron god of the Aztec priesthood, of learning and knowledge. Quetzalcoatl was one of several important gods of the Aztecs along with the gods Tlaloc, Tezcatlipoca and Huitzilopochtli - the Aztec god of war.

The Aztec Cosmos (the big wheel sun stone) depicts all of the deities and symbols of the different day gods. It is a huge historical artifact that was preserved and gives us literally tons of information of the Aztec gods and how they studied the stars, the sun, and the constellations in the sky.

The worship of Quetzalcoatl sometimes included animal sacrifices, and in colonial traditions Quetzalcoatl was said to oppose human sacrifices. Some historians, notably those of the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) say that Quetzalcoatl was actually Jesus Christ who visited the Americas and became a god to them, spreading the teaching of the one god system.
