May 16th, 2010 - Threadgills, Austin, TX

Some days it does pay to get out of bed. Austin rocks and has for quite some time now. Among Austin's nick names, the Live Music Capitol of the World seems to stand out. There are so many venues for live music here that you can't spit a watermelon seed without hitting one.

Today's venue for me was the Steamboat Reunion at Threadgills south. The show I really went to see is Van Wilks. I've heard quite a bit about him in the last few years. He was voted best guitarist in Austin for 2008 and 2009. I will give him this one - he is an excellent guitarist.

The drummer, Chris Giles put on a great show and seemed to enjoy himself. The bass guitarist was quite accomplished also. I didn't catch his name though. The group had fun and played five or six killer songs.

Van Wilkes and the rest of the show was pretty good! The line up started at 2:30 pm and featured:

All accomplished live music bands that are seen around Austin. Click on the links to learn more about the bands.

Threadgills - History and Legend

Since 1933, Threadgill's has had down home cooking. The food they are most famous for is the vegetable plates. They do serve the Texas staple, Chicken Fried Steak, but the sides are warm and generous. If you need a plate of fried Chicken Livers, this is the best place ever! What? You don't eat Chicken Livers? Well, you ain't from Texas then, are you?

Threadgill's restaurants, museum and live music venues have been featured in many books, magazines, and TV shows. The place has more to do with Austin’s cultural and musical heritage than most any other venue within the city limits

Janis Joplin was discovered here. Willie Nelson has played here. Jerry Lee Lewis played a piano here that now hangs from the ceiling of Threadgill’s World Headquarters. This place was probably the model for the Hard Rock Cafe's decor.

I've never been to Texas but the more I hear about it, I think I'd have to add it to one of my stops in the giant RV equipped with plenty of room for my computer, Bob and my pups!

I have a Bob too! And pups. They are mostly rescue dogs, but we have created doggie heaven here at the Ranch.

I have only been to Austin once but I spent a couple nights on 14th St? Is that right? Anyway, the music was great. And I love music. Thanks.

Hi James, 6th street is probably the place. Most of the live music venues are one 6th which is also called Pecan street and where the two big Spring and Fall festivals are held. It's well known for people watching! Did your band play here?

I never did play in Texas. But yea, 6th street must be it. I love that big beautiful lake you have downtown too. I spent time on it in a slow boat. With cocktails, of course. :D

It is a beautiful lake! It was recently renamed for Lady Bird Johnson. Used to be Lake Austin. I will have to do a hub about the Bat Watching Cruises!
