The Woman in Yellow, Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii Photo by L.A. Cargill
62Sunrise Haleakala
Sunrise at Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii
Mark Twain said of this place, "the sublimest spectacle I have ever witnessed". He was right. I have witnessed this sublime spectacle many times. One of my favorite places to visit on Maui is Haleakala crater - the House of the Sun.
There are many tours that will take tourists up to the summit for sunrise. My favorite is the bike tour. I never took it myself, just drove the chase van. But it is wonderful. They paid me ten bucks an hour for the 10 hour day, so I made $100 on my days off from the hospital, plus tips. Good money!
We would pick up the vans in Lahaina, then go pick up the tourists. Our day began at 2 a.m. We had to have everything ready, everyone picked up and staged before we started the 45 minute drive to the summit. We provided coffee and pastries for breakfast and passed out the blankets. The coffee got everyone awake, the blankets kept them warm because it's cold up at the 10,300 foot summit at dawn. That's for sure.
By the time we got to the summit, everyone was ready to get out of the van. I caught this photo of one woman wrapped in the golden blanket. The shadows are perfect, the clouds are perfect, The lines of the mountain shadows are perfect. I thought at the time that this is the best photo of a Haleakala sunrise I have ever shot.
I still think so.

Great hub Austinstar!
Terrific hub. As much as I would love the idea of visiting Hawaii, I just can't imagine the plane ride!
Austinstar - Photos can be great art as well as being precise and accurate. Cargill's is one of those.

Wonderful pic. I've never been to Hawaii, but I find it gorgeous!
