Dreams as live psychic readings. Do we receive psychic messages while we dream?
78Psychic dream?
We hear tales of identical twins having a psychic bond. They frequently say that they dream of the same things. This is true of other family members too. Many people relate to "feeling" what another family member is going through. The messages often comes through our dreams.
Waking up one morning, I recalled a specific dream. I was trapped in a house with lots of windows. I was moving from window to window looking out to see children playing in a sand box. They had the standard yellow plastic buckets and red plastic shovels. They were digging in the sand and they suddenly came across a leg. Then they dug up some other body parts and finally, my brother's head!
The dream remained with me throughout the day, so I tried to call my brother to check on him. He was in college at the time and hard to get in touch with. It was several days before I learned where he was and what had happened. He had been hit by a car and was in traction in the hospital. His leg was fractured in many places and they rest of his body was banged up.
Was my dream a live psychic reading? It certainly seemed so.
The Dream analyzer...

I copied and pasted my dream above about my brother into the dream analyzer linked here. It gave me a reasonable interpretation of it as a regular dream, but not as a psychic dream. Try it yourself!
Analyzing your dreams...
- Keep a notebook and pen by your bed. This is the single most important thing you can do to track your dreams.
- Write down the physical elements in your dreams, houses, cars, trees, mountains, etc...
- Write down colors or non-colors, sights, sounds, smells.
- Write down who was present. If you don't know the person, write down a description and give him/her a name of some kind.
- Write down emotions like fear, love, hate, anger.
- Write down the time of day or night in your dream if it is known.
- Write down the action that is happening.
- Basically, record the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How of the dream. Anything you remember may be related to the dream message.

Generalizations
These symbols and objects and interpretations are only a superficial explanation for some of the things we see in dreams. People do have psychic dreams, but the interpretations are personal and can only be interpreted by the dreamer or a skilled professional.
Words of Warning...
Having psychic dreams can be a boon or a curse. Having any kind of psychic ability imposes a responsibility on the psychic.
Do you warn people of things you've seen? Do you not warn them? What are the consequences of either action?
If you have many psychic dreams or psychic abilities, please keep track of how many pre-cognitions are actually real. Learn your limitations, your weaknesses and strengths. Pay attention to things around you.
People with strong psychic abilities should get some training from a reputable school. I'm not very psychic so I've never checked them out, but you should if it applies. I've experienced a few psychic dreams and visions, but not enough to think of myself as a true psychic.
Dreaming is not a reliable science. There are many things that cannot be explained. No one knows exactly how dreams work or how to interpret each and every dream. It's all sort of meta-physical and subjective.

Austinstar! Your creative mind is shining thorugh in this! You have just stretched my imagination. I love everything about dreams - hearing about them , having them and trying to figure out what and if they are meaningful. The brain is a fascinating organ and I wish that we could unlock all the secrets up there. I once heard that all the answers we seek are in our own heads, we just have to find them. I do love a good mystery.
The video is beautiful and I can't believe how perfect it is for this piece. Your work is so professional and admirable!
Thank you so much for the mention!! You are too much!
Thank you, Lela, for the dreams video. It's awesome - just like your interesting hub. Voted up.
That is terrible! They didn't actually have someone fit one on you first? There are many sizes! I suggest that you try to readjust it headgear and all until it's feels right - but we always had to fit the patient in person!
I always say that I'm funny. But looks aren't everything:)
I hope your brother is ok! That is strange you had that dream!
I wrestled all night with that dream catcher - haha! I'm working with it now!
Good hub Austin. Interesting.
Whether dreams are anything more than sleeptime thoughts in video form has yet to be proven. Perhaps the soul departs the body while we sleep; lurks in the shadows and looks back at us wondering if it is time to leave all together. Seriously, I believe the function of dreams is perhaps to arrange certain parts of our minds in order to better deal with life while awake. They definitely have a function, I believe, but perhaps no metaphysical reality...does anything!? Bob
That will work but it's a shame the gel mask didn't. Just one thing - since now I know you weren't fitted for the new mask - did you pull it away from your face after turning the pressure on and position it snugly around your nose? This will help you get a good "seal" around your nose to prevent those pesky leaks!
I wish I could just come on over and fit you for the correct one myself! Those masks come in S, M, LG and I think they have some narrow and wide variations. Darn!
Hey Austin- enjoyed the article.
Dreams fascinate me also.
Fire and water seem to frighten people in dreams when in fact both represent cleansing.
Its worth it to catalog dreams. for those who have recurrent dreams the possibility is high that some work hasn't been completed- something needs to finish in the dreamers life.
for the most part the simplest explanation is usually the correct one.
Follow this up with another is my advice. great topic lady!
peace- greg
Me too! I could use a new stomach and a body lift:-)!
But I want the mask to work! You won't get to dream as much if it doesn't! It irks me that they just mailed you any old one. There are hundreds of types and sizes.
Hey - I like your face just how it is! I don't like the remade, no wrinkle, magazine perfection faces - no character in the face or the head! I love REAL people!
Very interesting hub. I think most people have psychic dreams. The question is what is the mechanism that brings them? Are they the result of some innate ability that we possess, or are they messages imparted from some agency outside ourselves?
I think there is so much about the brain we don't understand. Did you see that special with Mary Lou Henner and others like her? They can remember every single day of their life and what they were doing on each day. They did a brain scan and found they have a larger portion of working matter of the brain than other people. So how were they able to tap into that?
I think if we understood how to make it work better we would find out that ESP is real too. I wish we knew more. All the secrets are in the brain!
Oh gosh! No one would want mine! It's all messed up and probably looks like Swiss cheese!
Oh you know what you reminded me of? I keep having these water dreams! Frequently I dream that I am on a course of water in a boat or a canoe. There are many obstacles and it is a little bit worrisome wether I will make the next turn. Sort of like a white water rafting course with huge rocks and narrow streams to navigate.
Wow! Now I'm really thinking about how weird that is:-). I have wondered about these dreams when they occur. I have noticed they are very similar but not exactly the same. Sometimes I am not in the boat I'm only watching it from above.
Well like I said if it isn't really working fine - I love the life I'm living! Haha!
This is a great read full of solid information and sound advice. A very large part of what I do is help people use their dreams to strengthen their inner connection and facilitate the healing they desire. I myself spent many years writing every dream and analysing it in order to understand myself better. I found that what I was doing was actually learning another language...the language of the subconscious. Dreams continue to be a very big part of my life and the very first words after good morning with each member of my family is " Where did you go last night in your dreams?" We have always shared our dreams at the table at breakfast time and that is why we get up a little earlier than most. Our dream world is every bit as important to us as our ordinary waking world. This is one of the reason why I feel a great affinity to the Native American Indians who put great store in dreams.
You are very kind to mention me here in your hub and I am very grateful to you and RealHousewife for the much appreciated support you have given me. There is only one thing I do not agree with you on in this hub and that is your negative evaluation of your own psychic ability. It doesn't matter what I say however, if you choose to believe otherwise then you win! If you ever have a warning dream for me please let me know because I know you are the real deal. BTW do you remember the dreams that the Apache Goyakla AKA Geronimo had, if you don't I would highly recommend you check them out. He was an expert. You my dear are voted up and awesome.
Me again. Re your remark about the universal force that connects people. Freud was trying to find the unifying force all his life. We do know now that particles journey all over space, some small enough to pass right through us and the planet. But it's hard to see how any coherent messsge our senses - asleep or awake and should one exist, could interpret and change them into images or sound. But it's a big universe and lots yet to know...Bob
I meant Einstein, not Freud...Duh! Bob
I found both the video and your hub fascinating. Jung's theory of the collective unconscious may play a part in dreams.
Do you ever daaydream while in that state between being awake and falling asleep?
Back again. There IS something coming, on the horizon. Big...really big. Dreams are a doorway, glimpses of the massive data bank you call your brain. You pick up subliminal elements during your waking times. Now, what those subliminal elements are, and how they happen to be where you can "pick them up" is a whole different subject. Just as the muscles of your body weaken if not exercised, the ability to remember dreams fade if not used.
I might as well just cut and paste what Diogenes said in his first comment because it pretty well meshes with my own thoughts.
Dreams are a mystery ..
Psychic dreams? I don't know....to be honest, it seems fanciful, although I'm pretty impressed with that leg in the sandbox dream.
I like Druid's idea that dreams are a way to explore our own unconscious, and as Diogenes said, help us to deal with conscious reality. That would seem to make sense...at least to me. Perhaps it's during dreams that the conscious and unconscious minds reconcile in some way.
Freud believed dreams were a kind of wish fulfillment; that is, in order to live successfully with other humans in a society, we have to repress certain impulses and urges and it's these which surface in our dreams. All those things we shove down with a big stick when we're conscious come creeping out in the night and escape as dreams. Not sure about that one either.
There must be a reason we usually don't remember dreams. ..I tend to only remember them if I'm awakened prematurely and not naturally.
Great to learn that in the dream world falling is interpreted as spiritual increasing.I used to think if anyone dreaming falling down means he is going to either die or lose money :)
Thanks a lot.
It is my opinion that if we do remember dreams then it is our subconscious trying to tell us something or help us in some way. If no dreams are occurring then problems are not surfacing there and that's probably good. If you are having dreams that you remember then you might need to work them out and your brain wants to tell you something. In my experience it isn't always a bad thing or always scary. I have really funny dreams that relate too!
I can not prove that - it is my own belief.
Universal force, or shared subconscious, sounds reasonable enough. The depth and breadth of our consciousness (s) I feel can be compared to radio frequencies. So much about our existence seems to be about multiplicity. Perhaps our "spirit" selves are just another piece of that puzzle.
I have many different dream locations that I visit from time to time. They are like different homes and actually go through changes as time passes. My family and friends are usually in each one of these different dream worlds but differ slightly from one to the next. I have noticed that depending on emphasis I will awake with someone in particular on my mind. I can't claim anything as firm as your dream about your brother, but have found that I will soon hear from someone I dreamt about.
Hmmm.. life is wonderful, yes?
In my family we always tell each other our dreams at the breakfast table and our dad interprets them! This is a great Hub because it'll help me be able to interpret my dreams by myself, so that I can be the interpreter in my own family when I am older. Thanks again :)
An interesting hub Austinstar, but since you are a self proclaimed atheist I am more interested in how you reconcile "psychic" dreams or abilities with a universe view that does not incorporate such superstition. Am I to assume that you lend creedence to ESP, but deny the spiritual realm? Where is your scientific evidence for such a fallacious claim?
I've never had a "psychic" dream, therefore you must not have either...Hmm, that seems a little deja vu doesn't it.
Be careful, your hypocrisy is showing.
Hi Austinstar...I should have started out by saying that I enjoyed the hub. I did in fact, so please accept my apology for not having stated so, but I was taken back by it.
Psychic ability is not widely accepted in the Atheist community, so you can understand my astonishment. In fact the web is chock-full of Atheist/Agnostic refutal to such abilities. YouTube even has a site offering a $1,000,000 to any scientifically observed and substantiated occurance.
I myself do not discount psychic ability, but alas I know that I have none. I do well to see the road in front of me, much less tomorrow. The sandbox dream is compelling, and I can understand how it could contribute to an individuals idea that it held some creedence, but I did not expect it from you. I would have been far less surprised had you simply labeled it a coincidence.
I was also surprised at your admission that it has anything to do with the "meta-physical" since Metaphics is first and foremost a philosophy based in cosmology and theories of epistemology.
Next you'll tell me you substantiate Quantum Jumping, and Astral Projection?
How do you affirm the possibility of a 'psychic' event that would allow an individual through dream, or otherwise to percieve of another persons calamity, but deny the possibility of a conscious energy existing that might allow our essence to continue on after death?
However you choose to justify it is of little consequence to me, but there is a glaring contradiction in your justifications when you have openly stated that you would destroy religion or belief in God.
Your own beliefs, however unfounded in the scientific method, are in fact grounded in biblical tradiion. In the biblical tradition 'psychic' ability is called prophecy, so what you are really espousing is your own version of a religious doctrine. This does not fit with your pretense of adherence with the traditional Atheist view.
Austinstar - I have done lots of research with regard to the brain. We may think we know a lot about the way that it works - but there is more that we do not understand. I truly believe that there are ways to tap into those unknown portions and use the abilities without understanding how it happens. Take Marilou Henner for instance - and others like her. They can recall every day of their lives and tell you in chronological order if you choose, exactly what happened on any given day in their past. No one knows how - they did research their brains and found that their's were larger in one area. Just saying....I think some people can tap into areas that we do not understand yet.
Gosh - hasn't everyone seen Firestarter! (Ok - kidding!)
I hope I live to see it too. My mom and I just had a conversation about this today - she asked me if I thought about God and hoped for his protection during the tornado! I said no I honestly never thought about God - I was thinking about science - weather!
I have no intention of burning anyone, nor is it my intent to 'catch you', but I do seek to understand.
Are you aware of your habit of claiming what I believe? I did not first bring God into the dialogue, you did. Then you went on about 'giants in the sky', and 'Santa Claus'...In your second reply you continued with what is painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and what is mentioned in the Bible. These things are your mis-perceptions about what I believe...Someday I may share with you why I came to believe in a creator, but I can assure you that it had little to do with magical beings like Santa Claus, or so called 'giants of the sky'. it's possible that you may actually even find some similarity with your psychic dream.
From where I sit it is apparent that your psychic dream has revelance on why you think there is some credibility to ESP and other psychic phenomena, even in the face of no substantial scientific proof. From that it should be easy for you to understand why people choose to believe in God.
The other evening I watched an individual on television explain how he felt a presence that he attributs to God guiding him out of the south tower on 9/11. He and others had tried the stairwell and could not get through, so they had essentally given up. After many of them had succumbed to smoke inhalation, this man felt a presence that 'spoke' to him and guided him down the stairwell through flames and smoke to become the last individual out of the south tower before it collapsed.
A scientist that has a theory about a protective mechanism in the brain he calls "the third man effect" explained how this might be a self preservation function attributed to activity in the brain allowing us to 'step back' and view our predicaments from the perspective of a third person. The scientist explained the theory and possible functionality to this individual who was saved from the tower by whatever it was he experienced, and the man rejected the scientific theory in favor of the presence of God.
Now I don't know if this man was a believer prior to his 9/11 experience or not, but what I do know is that his being spared from death has had a profound effect on him, and that he is not alone in this type of experience. Quite literally millions of people have experienced a 'presence' at one point in their lives that they believe is a Godly force.
Who are you to say there is no God? If a metaphysical force can exist to the point of showing you a connection across miles with a siblings pain when there is no 'logical' explanation for it being 'psychic'? In your own words {Our puny scientific methods haven't discovered the way these things work yet.} How do you know that the puny scientific methods won't one day prove the existence God? Answer: You Don't!
Something else you wrote struck me as odd also...{If something can be imagined by man, it's entirely possible that it can be created by man!} Oh yeah, well create for me a universe...Assuming that 'man' means 'mankind' and that a woman is capable creating whatever she can imagine as well...That's a joke of course, but the point is still valid. Imagining is not doing, and your assertion wreaks of 'man created God', but there is no question for me of God's exisence. I am as confident of God's existence as I am that my car is in the garage. Whether you choose to believe is irrelevant, God is, and God believes in you.
Well I hate to lighten up the moment - but I will!
I had the nuttiest dream last night! I guess I was working on a new hub and read several of yours before bed - what? I was looking for something!
I dreamed about this hub! I also dreamed that Jane Bovary left a comment for me and I was answering it - I said I thought her comments were smart and funny!
I don't know Jane! I've truly only read some of her comments - but I'm definitely going to look her up! LOL!
I looked her up and started following her:) I think I'm supposed to! Haha!
You're cool Austinstar, and even nerdy smart, but there you go again telling me what I believe....{Everything is "God did it".} Nothing is further from the truth, you forget those things that man does through that free will thing. Not all of what man does is good, nor is it all bad. I give God credit for creation, and for life, but for the automobile, or chemotherapy for instance, the credit goes to man.
Your static universe theory is old and was the 'brain child' of Albert Einstein.....The one he disowned when observable science of an expanding universe provided the smoking gun for its demise. The understanding being that if the universe is expanding, then it has always been expanding since it began...You should study up on the Hadron Collider and see how science is on the verge of proving the big bang. With your interest in Physics, you will no doubt understand it better than most. Some might see the big bang and a creator as incompatible, but I do not....No matter, the point is that nothing in observable nature just exists with out beginning or end, and there is no credible evidence that the same is not true of the universe. Once you understand that simple thing.....Well, you get the idea.
It's a great challenge, but I have no illusions that I or anyone else in world today can elucidate either point of view on the creator subject to the exclusion of the other. If I could do that, then I would be $rich, $rich, $rich!
As always Austinstar, you have been an inspiration of thought, but I am about to be taking another leave of absence from HubPages as I get ready for a vacation with the wife. So I'll have to say goodbye for now, I leave in a couple of days and I haven't started packing yet. plus I want to publish some of my own work before I leave. I'm just now really starting to get the hang of this "empty nester" thing.
You know Austinstar, there was time when science fell under the providence the church. Many of the scientists througout time and even today have been believers in God. Newton comes to mind as an example. The Moors (Muslims of old) had advanced knowledge of astronomy, and anatomy while Europe suffered through the dark ages.
The idea that science and religion must each exist exclusive of each other is relatively new.
As for my cell phone...I hate the damn thing! Even if I doubted its ability to 'reach out an touch someone', or X-rays for that matter; my doubt would not stop a technichian from being able to take a picture of my bones, nor would radio waves cease to exist. The quote is 'flowery', but holds no actual meaning.
I suppose I could refute by stating that you doubt God at the risk of eternity, but since I really don't believe quite that way, I can't throw my heart into it.
I'm really enjoying the commentary!
I have to say - did you know that your skin - every single cell is emitting very minute amounts of electricity? All the time - from every cell. BUT - when you go into REM during sleep - a very strange thing happens that is not completely understood. You lose almost every bit of muscle tone and your bio-electrical potentials are very hard to detect. Researchers believe that this is your body's way of protecting itself so you do not act out your dreams. We become paralyzed in effect
Okay - sorry for the intrusion!
Right! We had a lot of kids that had issues and bed wetting was a complaint. I truly believe it may have to do with a certain part of the brain that may not quite be fully developed in some kids. You know the all or none theory? I think that the impulse to wake the child up doesn't make the jump from synapse to synapse and the impulse dies in route so to speak. That is just a reaching guess - but it is reasonable to me!
Well let's hope you don't develop rem behavior disorder! Bob will have to sleep in his own room! With the door locked!
I think it took me longer to get through all the great comments than the hub itself. Great topic and Hub!
I had a dream once about my grandfather who had died years earlier and in the dream I was visiting him as he was ill. The next morning I was telling my Dad about my dream as I usually did and he told me to call my Uncle as he thought maybe the dream was a message. Sure enough I called my Uncle and he was ill.
It could be were all connected.. I worked in a health office and the year before 911, I had a dream, that America was going to be attacked..I wasn't given much detail..but I did tell the social worker that I worked with about it the next day..I told her that often my dreams came true..It happened a year later..
I really enjoyed reading this and its maid me start paying more attention to the things I dream about. Now I have a dream book next to my bed.. thanks
A LETTER FROM SPAIN (EUROPE)
I´m worried about something simple: Barak Obama travels back to Jerusalem.
The problem started when i read the dream of Jeane Dixon, on 5 February, about a boy an increased when the water became the Gulf of Mexico into something nasty by BP (not wine) and i thought it was repeate the story of Lazarus in the body American congresswoman to witch they gave up for dead and after Obama´s visit opened his eyes.
Obama now must go to Jerusalem and then be judged and condemned.
I expect the worst and no way to avoid it.
(note: It is interesting what you wrote about McCormick. I left a possible solution.)
bye.
I enjoyed reading about psychic dreams. I have had them and they are quite interesting. Sometimes I share my dreams other times I don't.
One night back in 1975. My sister had a dream. In her dream she was driving a car on the way to my mother's home. When she woke up she did not pay much attention to it because she would go home to our parent's home in another town. The next day she was driving with her family to my parent's home. Then at midday a speeding car hit her car. She said it was exactly like her dream.
Really interesting.I've asked a similar question about my dreams.Your hub is really helpful.Voted up.Could you also see the question I've asked in my page.Thank you.

Good hub, and I voted you up. You work in a precise profession and you have rounded your perimeters by the enhancement of dream theory.
